CONCERNING THE ARMY AT WARNING The question that can be asked here is, first of all, what was the exact context in which the Legion of Mary was founded? In a sense, what prompted Duff to form it? Does it have anything to do with Montfort's writings, say as to when Mgr. Duhamel in Canada founded the Association of Mary Queen of Hearts or AMQAH, it was because after reading Montfort's writings about true devotion to Mary.
Regarding its initial formation, HANDBOOK explained: “At first, the Legion of Mary was not a planned association. It grows spontaneously without any prior planning in regulation and implementation” (HANDBOOK 9). Spontaneous. Everything is spontaneous. The presence of an immaculate statue of Mary, modeled on the Miracle Medal, which graced the first meeting table, is said to have been “prepared by accident” (HANDBOOK 377). The Holy Spirit is used to encourage people to be creative spontaneously. If everything is planned, later human ideas will run. But if the Holy Spirit initiates, His initiative intelligence will awaken surprises in man, to purify his motivation. So this work of the Spirit presupposes a high degree of surrender in man to let the Holy Spirit act in and through him. So, If LEGIO MARIA became what it is today, it is because of the fruit of the initiative and the work of the Holy Spirit on the one hand and human cooperation in the form of surrender and perseverance on the other. The group, which is still a continuation of the SSV, decided to fill their meeting day with the rosary, in addition to everything put (teaching or brief conference) in the typical SSV model, then there is a division of tasks to visit sick people in the Dublin city hospital.
Montfort's writings are indeed mentioned in HANDBOOK, especially those which are explicitly titled True Devotion to Mary which Duff had known 4 years before forming LEGIO MARIA, and of course also The Secret of Mary Secret (SM). It was certain that Duff had read these books many times. These two books – as he recommended to the Legionaries – he read not just “once but many times” (HANDBOOK 375) to better understand the true devotion that Montfort taught so that he could make conference material for his colleagues at Myra House. It was the possible deposition of his conferences that he later wrote as a commentary on the TD, entitled "The Montfort Way"[1]Our question is why three years later, in 1925, the name of the group “Our Lady of Mercy” (Mother of Mercy) was replaced by Frank Duff with a new name: Legion of Mary? Is there a direct connection between the name Legio which means army, army, and Montfort's predictions about the existence of an army or army in the future, as contained in his books TD and PM? Or was it inspired to read the “prophecy” that Frank Duff founded a group called the Legion of Mary?
Indeed, Montfort's prediction of troops in the TD is quoted in HANDBOOK p. 153 to clarify Montfort's biography and why he is listed as one of LEGIO MARIA's patron saints. Because the quotations listed under each description of a theme in HANDBOOK serve to clarify or emphasize or underline synthetically and authoritatively the teachings or whatever is described above. On p. 153 we read the quote from Montfort's “divination”: “I saw clearly what was to come: fierce beasts came raging to tear with their devilish teeth this simple book with him whom the Holy Spirit had used to write it, or at least to hide it in darkness and silence in a chest to keep it from being famous. Even all the men and women who read it and put it into practice would be attacked and persecuted. But that's okay! Even better! This foresight fueled my spirits and made me look forward to great success: a great army of valiant warriors of Jesus and Mary, both men and women, who are fighting the world, demons, and rotten nature in the very dire times, which are sure to come.. “Whoever reads it, let him understand it” (Matthew 24:15). "He who can understand, let him understand" (Matt 19:12)" (TD 114, italics from the author).
There are two things found in this number. First is the possibility that in the future the book he is writing (TD) will be found in an imperfect condition because people have hidden it in the dark and damaged its pages, and the life of the author – Montfort himself – is in danger. Amazingly, these first visions have happened in history, both in his book and in Montfort's own life.Second relates to the future existence of a great army, the valiant warriors of Jesus and Mary to fight against the power of Satan. Although the vision refers to all Christians whose hopes will become extraordinarily reliable apostles for the Kingdom, in a reduced way we can refer to the Legion of Mary, because all the elements of the spirituality of the army, are found in the teachings of Montfort, are all "connected" with spirituality. the Legion of Mary. In this context, we then ask: did Duff form the Legion of Mary because she was impressed by Montfort's "prophecy", even though at first the name of the group was Mother of Mercy? Or in another formula, Is this group formed by Duff the Incarnation of the prophecy? The next question is whether Duff gave the name "Legion of Mary" to the group previously called the Mother of Mercy after understanding well the spirituality of the spiritual war against demons that Montfort proclaimed?
To all these questions, HANDBOOK is silent. HANDBOOK has only come to the statement that this HANDBOOK is “full of the spirit of the soul of St. Montfort”, without elaborating on his meaning. Unfortunately, although HANDBOOK quotes TD 114, the historical connection of the quote with the name “Legion of Mary” is not stated. It is also a pity that Robert Bradshaw's biography of Duff, published in Montfort Publications is not yet at our disposal to detect Duff's historical affinity with Montfortian's inspiration, neither for the founding nor for the naming of the Legion of Mary. Exactly, in what ways is the spirituality of the Legion of Mary's army "connected" with the spirituality of Montfort's army? Although a detailed description of the "connection" of Montfort's spirituality with Duff will still be presented later in Chapter IV, this section will mainly explore the meeting points that are directly related to the NAME of the Legion of Mary to detect the possibility of this historical relationship. Here are a few things that can be said.
First, there is a fighting army. In addition to being contained in TD 114 above, there is also another writing from Montfort, namely Doa Menggelora (PM), in which the same idea can be found. Since he wrote this prayer to implore the Holy Trinity to send priests who would join him to take part in the renewal of the Church and the world, the idea of "fighting armies" in the TD is applied to a lesser extent as the identity of the priests, who are now joining the Company of Mary (SMM). These priests will become mighty and well-ordered armies and warriors under the guidance of the Holy Spirit ready to fight to conquer the enemies. In that PM Montfort prayed: "Whoever takes the side of the Lord, come to me" (Ex 32:26). Let all the great priests who are now scattered throughout the world, both those who are engaged in the active apostolate and those who lead contemplative lives in remote places, join us. Unity grows strength. So we will form under the banner of the cross an army that is ready to fight and neatly organized so that together we attack the enemies of God who are ready to attack” (PM 29).
Second, the existence of the army is the work of the Holy Spirit and it is in the power of the Holy Spirit that they also fight. The existence of this army is not a human initiative, but the work of the Holy Spirit. So it is not just a social organization but an organism of the work of the Holy Spirit. In the PM, the Holy Spirit was addressed by Montfort as "God the Almighty". Montfort prayed to the Holy Spirit: "Then will hardly anyone take your side, O Almighty God, even though in your service there is a great deal of honor, gain and wealth?" (PM 28). Therefore, O Holy Spirit, "Carry out Your divine initiative! Gather, call, gather your elect from all corners of the world to make one army against Your enemies” (TD 26).Thirdis Mary's role in the Incarnation. Maria has the role of giving birth spiritually and forming / fostering/training (through workshop or training) members of the Legion who will advance to the battlefield. The members of this army will become extraordinarily reliable apostles (become great saints) for the Kingdom of Christ. And the role that Mary played was heavily underlined because of the power of the Holy Spirit and because she was with the Holy Spirit, as happened at the time of the Incarnation. In that PM Montfort prayed:
“MEMENTO: O Holy Spirit, remember to give birth to and form the children of God in union with Mary, Your heavenly and faithful bride. With him and in him Thou hast formed the Head of the Chosen People; with him and in him you must form the members of his body…all the saints from the past, from the present to the end of time are works of your love with Mary” (PM 15).Fourth, the idea of "eternal war" between the Church - under the leadership of Mary - against the devil as stated in HANDBOOK 9. This idea is very strong Montfort. Because in Montfort's view – following the Church Fathers –, Mary was always in (eternal) enmity with Satan. Because the words that God spoke in paradise to the serpent about his enmity with Eve were attributed to Satan who was hostile to Mary, the New Eve, and the descendants of Satan (in the increasingly complex form of the problem of evil and sin) who were hostile to the descendants of the New Eve. Montfort wrote:
“One must understand the first prophecy and curse, which was spoken by God against the serpent in the garden of paradise. Here is the place to interpret it for the glory of the holiest Virgin, for the salvation of her children, and the sake of humiliating Satan. 'I will put enmity between you and this woman, between your offspring and her offspring; he will crush your head, and you will block his heel' (V/Gen 3:15)” (TD 51). So, this hostility continues. Many humans have lost by surrendering their hearts and lives to the devil and his evil powers which degrade the dignity of human vocation and mission in the world. Satan has won many times. But he was decisively defeated through the death and resurrection of Christ. At the time of the crucifixion, the power of evil (symbolized by the serpent) "bites" Jesus' feet on the cross, with mighty nails. But Jesus won because He lived it all out of love for God and neighbor. Jesus has been faithful to His calling and mission. It was obedience that made Him victorious, even though His feet were nailed. The serpent failed to tempt Him to come down from the Cross and save himself (cf. Mk 15:31). So at that time Jesus actually "smashed the serpent's head", He was the descendant of the woman, the descendant of New Eve, who won. The bite of the snake and its deadly venom did not destroy Jesus. With His resurrection, He declared the definitive victory over Satan and his forces of evil. because He lived it all out of love for God and neighbor. Jesus has been faithful to His calling and mission. It was obedience that made Him victorious, even though His feet were nailed. The serpent failed to tempt Him to come down from the Cross and save himself (cf. Mk 15:31). So at that time Jesus actually "destroyed the serpent's head", He was the descendant of the woman, the descendant of New Eve, who won. There have been many descendants of Eve, and none of them succeeded in conquering the devil. Now, if anyone can, namely Jesus Christ, it means that the mother who gave birth to Him is very special compared to Eve. Because Eve had disobeyed. Surely the mother of Jesus was an obedient person too, because of the merits of Jesus' salvation. Now, this is where the Legion of Mary's devotion to Mary Immaculate comes from. Because in the words of Allah's curse on the serpent above, it has already been described (typologically: foreshadowing, prefiguration) the existence of a future obedient woman, different from Eve. It is this woman who becomes the “new Eve”, in antithetical parallelism with the first Eve, who fell into sin[2]. If Mary's Immaculate Conception is described in the words of the punishment, then in fact there is already contained therein also the Motherhood of Mary, namely the role of the divine motherhood towards Jesus in redemption and the spiritual motherhood of the Church in Sanctification. For it was in this context that God formed Mary in a “wholly holy” state from her mother's womb. Therefore, the children of Mary are warriors, armies ready to fight against the devil. The first child, the Word incarnate, has won gloriously. The effectiveness of His victorious power applies anticipatively to Mary, so that Mary also wins against Satan, to give birth to Him in this world. On this point, Montfort asserts:
“God once created and formed only one enmity, that is, an irreconcilable enmity, which continues and will develop to the end, between Mary, the worthy Mother of Christ, and Satan; between the children, the servants of the holy Virgin with the children, the minions of Lucifer. The most formidable enemy that God raises against Satan is none other than Mary, His holy Mother” (TD 52).
Now, it was the turn of the spiritual children of Mary, who believed in her Son, fought against the devil, and again because of the power of Christ's resurrection, victory was a certainty for them, like Mary. This is understood so well by Duff, that in HANDBOOK he writes – still referring to the words that Allah spoke to the serpent above:
“This word – addressed by Almighty God to Satan – is held by the Legion as a source of confidence and strength in the battle against sin. With all his heart the Legion intends to be fully descended, the children of Mary, for that is the guarantee of victory. The more the Legion makes Mary its Mother, the greater will be the enmity of the Legion with the power of evil and the more complete will be the victory of the Legion” (HANDBOOK 22).
Thus, the Church also never sleeps or is negligent. He's always on the alert! For he is always in a conscious war with the devil. For this enmity continues, as Montfort puts it: “But God does not limit himself to one enmity. He spoke of many enmities: Not only between Mary and Satan but also between the descendants of Mary and the descendants of Satan” (TD 54).
Fifthcome down to the battlefield are also the angels. They are always on the battlefield. Montfort had a personal devotion to angels, particularly the three archangels. Milana, after returning from Rome in 1706 to receive a direct orientation from Pope Clement XI on his apostolic work, before starting to work in the West of France, immediately set his feet – because he always walked – to Mont-Sant-Michel (the hill of Saint Michael the Angel). on the Atlantic coast for pilgrimage. Only then did he start working, fighting, fighting…. with the protection of the Archangel Michael. Therefore, he prayed to the Holy Spirit: “Is there not a single soldier who is willing to fight under Your banner? Is there no one like Mikael, who passionately defends Your glory, will dare to cry out amid his brethren: “Who is like God?” (Rev 12:7; 13:4)” (PM 28)? The call to the (great) angels is also part of the Legionary prayer. To be strong in battle. And win!
Sixthabout the weapons used in the battle. The weapons are not bombs, mines, pistols, machetes, bamboo spears, catapults…. Nor is it harsh criticism, anger, hatred, canned writing, gossip, slander…. But his armor is divine: “put on the whole armor of God” (Ephesians 6:11). In particular, the weapons that Mary uses to win are humility, obedience, and submission to God. Montfort asserts:
“What Lucifer lost out of pride, Mary won back because of her humility. What Eve made cursed and lost because of her disobedience, Mary saved because of her obedience. Listening to the devil, Eve plunged all her children with herself into an accident and handed them over to the devil. Having surrendered herself to God with complete fidelity, Mary saved all the children and their servants with herself and presented them to the Highest” (TD 53).
HANDBOOK 13 mentions several similar “weapons of God”, namely: loyalty, courage, discipline, fortitude, success…. this is the ammunition carried in battle. With that ammunition, Maria had won. Montfort emphasized:
“Mary has authority over the angels and saints in heaven. In return for his deep humility, God has given him the power and duty to place the Saints on thrones that have been left empty by the fall of the proud angels….: heaven, earth, and hell, inevitably have to conform to the commandments of the humble Mary” (TD 28).
Here is the image of Mary as Queen, which is why Legionaries pray in tessera, Salve Regina aka "Greetings, Queen ...".
Last. seventh, about the victory of Maria's children. If the Church struggles with Mary who is “the supreme ruler of heaven and earth, to be the commander-in-chief of armies, treasurer of wealth, distributor of graces, performer of miracles, restorer of mankind, mediator for mankind, exterminator of enemies and faithful partner in greatness and victory -the victory of God” (TD 28), and because they have all the spiritual qualities (weapons) as Mary had above, they will also be victorious, like Mary. And they reap it precisely when the devil is holding an increasingly fierce battle when he is increasing the pressure…. on Mary's children. The children of Mary are more hostile to the devil so that the attack on them will be carried out even more fiercely. To be victorious over Mary's children is Satan's pride.
“Especially in these last days Mary must frighten Satan and his accomplices, like an “army ready for battle” (V/Song 6:3); for Satan, knowing very well that there is a little less time left than before to plunge souls into perdition (Rev 12:12), is trying harder every day and fighting more fiercely. Soon the devil will wage terrible pursuits and make frightful ambushes against the faithful servants, the righteous children of Mary, for with them Satan has more trouble than with others” (TD 50).
With the "weapon of God", the children of Mary will indeed! For they fought under the protection of Mary. So in the tessera pray the oldest Marian prayer: sub tuum praesidium aka "Holy Mother of God, under your protection ...". Mary's protective role is described by Montfort as a mighty mother hen who takes care of her chicks:
So, three protagonists will work to mobilize the journey and growth of the holiness of the entire Church: the Holy Spirit, Mary, and the latter-day apostles who are none other than the children of Mary. These latter-day apostles, born of Mary because of the work of the Holy Spirit (F. 35) will be full of grace and zeal (F. 48), consisting of priests and laity – men and women – constitute “a great army of mighty warriors. courage of Jesus and Mary, both male and female, who fought against the world, the devil and the rotten nature in the very dire times, which are sure to come” (TD 114).
The idea contained in the PM is concrete and mini-application to the priests who are followers of an identity that is essentially applied to all believers as contained in the TD. Because the TD already found the spirituality of soldiers (TD 28, 50, 210) or soldiers (TD 114) or legion(8, 114), which are hostile to Satan and his evil powers (TD 51, 52, 54) and therefore under led by Mary they fought (182) or fought (50, 210) against the demon.
Based on the seven points mentioned above, we can firmly assert that it includes some of the basic characteristics of the Legion of Mary: why it is devoted to the Holy Spirit, why it chose Mary as commander in chief, why there is the idea of "eternal war", why the Legion is devoted to the statue of Mary all impeccable model Katerina Labouré, devoted to angels and Mary is the commander-in-chief of the angels, why is devoted to Mary-Queen,…and finally why the organization which was previously called “Mother of Mercy” four years later was changed to “Legion of Mary”.
It was indeed the model of leadership and the name of the Roman army that was adopted, as it is stated: “The Legion of Mary was organized according to the model of the army, especially like the ancient Roman army. Likewise, the name Legion is taken from the term Roman army” (HANDBOOK 9). It could be that the inspiration that pushed Duff to take the roman military organization system was Saint Clement,[3]Pope and Martyrs, who asked the Corinthian Church to learn from the virtues of the Roman army. Let's say the hardware – the structural-organizational system – is inspired by the control model in the military system of the Roman army.
However, looking at the seven characteristics above, it seems difficult for us to avoid this conclusion: that in giving the name "Legion Maria", Duff was inspired by Montfort, although in sources that are within our reach, no one has explicitly stated that: “the name Legion of Mary comes from the 'prophecy' of Saint Montfort as found in his two works, TD and PM”. Because shouldn't a chosen name reveal the spiritual identity it contains? And the fundamental features of the Legion of Mary's spiritual identity are found in Montfort's work as shown above.
So, from the structure of the Roman army, Duff took the hardware, from Montfort he took the software. So that all the "outward" qualities of the worldly soldiers are transferred to a spiritual level, "made supernatural" (HANDBOOK 371), such as: "loyalty, virtue, courage" (HANDBOOK 9), "loyalty, courage, discipline, fortitude and success" ( HANDBOOK 13) “surrender to leadership, a great sense of responsibility, resilience in the face of adversity, fortitude to suffer, loyalty to the task down to the smallest things” (HANDBOOK 372). All of them become Legionary weapons in daily battles. However, all these spiritual qualities the Holy Spirit can bestow on them if they are under Mary's guidance, in Mary's upbringing, like Mary, with Mary, for Mary. Because Montfort said:
“When the Holy Spirit, the Bride of Mary, finds Mary in one soul, then the Holy Spirit rushes over there, settles in there, and gives Himself abundantly to that soul. The same size as the place the man had vacated for His bride. The most important thing why the Holy Spirit does not perform striking miracles in souls today is that he finds them insufficiently intimate with his faithful and inseparable bride” (TD 36).
What happened to Montfort, was not providential but intentional. In the word “intentional” contained not only the conscious initiative of Duff himself but also the divine providence that directed him. For it is impossible for such a solid building of theological thought in the Legion of Mary to be so "connected" with Montfort's teachings if Duff himself had not studied with him. And it is evident that Duff had been reading BS 4 years before he founded LM. If 4 years later after founding LM (1925) he proposed the name Legio Maria, it is certainly because he had passed the period of deposition of the contents of the BS so that now he can convincingly propose the name LEGIO MARIA. Because LM's spirit is “the spirit of Mary herself” (HANDBOOK 13), and she extracted it from the spiritual teaching of this “herald of the Mother of God”, St. Montfort. After that, he consciously designed it in combination with the Roman army leadership system so that the LM truly “became a means of administering God's love” (HANDBOOK 9-10).
At the end of the quote about the army in TD 114 above, Montfort writes: “Whoever reads it, let him understand it (Matt 24:15). Whoever can understand, let him understand (Matt 19:12)” (TD 114). It seemed that Duff was someone who had understood and understood it well!
[1] Frank Duff, de Montfort Way, Montfort Publications, Bay Shore, NY 1947. It may be that this book was translated into Italian in 1941 by P. Buondonno, SMM under the title Prospettiva Monfortana su la Vera Devozione , Prospettiva Monfortana su la Vera Devozione, by Società Editrice Sant 'Alessandro, Bergamo. It is said "could be" because the original title of the book is not written in English, it only says "version dall'Inglese del ..." which means "translated from English by ...". The contents of this book are Duff's comments on TD. So it is very possible that "de Montfort Way" is translated as "prospective monfortana su la ..", which means "the prospect of St. Montfort on True Consecration”.
Kejadian 3:15).” (LG 55).
[3] Text from St. Clement: “Who are our enemies? They are evil ones who reject God's will. Therefore let us with determination strive to strive for Christ and submit ourselves to His glorious commandments. Let us investigate those who served in the Roman Legion under military rule and note their discipline, their readiness, their obedience in carrying out orders. Not everyone is a commander or tribune or high-ranking officer who oversees a hundred soldiers or commanders with fifty subordinates or enters a lower level of leadership. But everyone according to his rank carried out the orders of the emperor and his superior officers. The big cannot exist without the small; nor is there anything small without a big one. In an organism, all the parts form a certain union so that each part helps and is assisted by all. Let's look at the analogy with our bodies. The Head is nothing without legs; likewise, the feet are nothing without ahead. Even the smallest organ of our body is important and valuable for the whole body. In reality, all the parts cooperate in dependence on one another and produce common obedience for the benefit of the whole body” (Saint Clement, Pope, and Martyr: Letter to the Corinthians, 96 AD, Chapters 36 and 37) (HANDBOOK 14).
